How to Make Your Custom Pool Spooky This Halloween

Summer has officially ended, and that means October is upon us. And who can think of October without thinking of Halloween, pumpkins, and spooky scary skeletons? We know we’re thinking about it at Rock Custom Pools, and as custom pool designers, we love thinking about all the ways that homeowners could take advantage of their pool to add some extra spooky ambiance to their homes.

Of course, in Georgia, many pools aren’t open year around, and it’s your choice as to whether you want to keep it running through Fall and Winter, but if you want to keep your backyard pool open for one last hurrah come Halloween, you wouldn’t be the first one, and you won’t be the last.

Want some fun ideas on how to spookify your pool this fall? Consider these things:

Spookifying Your Pool For Halloween

Dark and Spooky Lighting

One of the biggest factors, if not the biggest factor in making a spooky pool is the lighting. What do you think of when you think of Halloween? If your mental image is clear sunny skies, brightly lit rooms, and the color white in general, you’re doing it wrong. Halloween is dark! Spooky! Scary! Your lighting should reflect this.

So, one thing you can do for starters is reduce the lighting in your backyard in general. If you have porch lights, deck lights, outdoor fixtures, or anything else, turn them off, dim them down, or replace them with a darker colored bulb.

When the area surrounding your pool has been adjusted to provide those Halloween vibes, you can look at your pool. We’ve fitted our client’s custom pools with all manner of lighting options, and this is where you get to have some fun.

Using the color red to light your pool can go a long way in spookifying your pool. This is a color that is usually strong and overpowering for a pool area, but it could be perfect if you’re purposely creating a scary look. We always associate pools with being on the lighter end of the blue scale. A glowing pit of red water is something we’re not used to seeing, and it’ll definitely improve your Halloween game.

Invest in Torch Lighting

Another good way to maintain general spookiness in your pool area is to make clever use of flame lighting. We’ve installed torch lighting in more pool areas than we can count, and it’s a good look for Halloween. The traditional mental vision of a haunted house is usually a building from older times, untouched by bright fluorescent lighting. It fits, then, to rely on flame lighting for a haunted area — an image and ambiance that evokes the supernatural.

By having a red-lit pool that’s only accompanied by burning flame torches, you could easily evoke an atmosphere of a haunted pool area — something that resembles your usually-cheery pool, but darker, and (you guessed it) spookier. If you have flame lighting already installed in your pool area, now is a great time to take advantage of it. Meanwhile, if you like the idea and you’d love to use Halloween as a great excuse to show it off, we’d be happy to install it for you in your custom pool area.

Pool Decorations

Aside from adjusting the lighting and ambiance, who can forget about the importance of fun Halloween decorations? While we unfortunately don’t have a supply on-hand of skeleton replicas and creepy witches, you can do your part by digging into your collection of Halloween junk and positioning it around your pool.

You’ll have to be mindful of what can and can’t be exposed to water, but as long as you’re being careful, it can be fun to deck your pool out with pumpkins, monsters, ghosts, and more. Cobwebs on the pool slide, skeletons lounging in your pool chairs, ghouls spying on you from across the yard — these are all things that can serve you to make your custom pool area a veritable spookfest.
